I've been using mushroom extracts to boost the immune systems of my hounds these past years, and they have helped tremendously. Kidney disease not progressing, thyroid cancer reduced, immune mediated issues held back - all my hounds living longer, healthier lives. These are human products that I take too.

SHIITAKE - Info from Mushroom Science web site:

Shiitake was the first medicinal mushroom to be scientifically studied for its immune support properties.*  By “medicinal” we mean those mushrooms that contain immuno-modulating beta glucans in the cell walls and have a history of use in Traditional East Asian Medicine.  This research started in Japan but was soon picked up by researchers from China and Korea. Shiitake was also the source of the first beta glucan isolate used for immuno-modulation in human clinical studies and medical practice; Lentinan.* All of this attention was probably due to the fact that Shiitake was so highly regarded as a healthy food.

In Japan and China Shiitake is considered to be the best of all plant foods.  The following is quoted from a Chinese handbook for medical workers: “Considering the five inevitable (sic) nutrients – protein, lipid, carbohydrate, minerals and vitamins, no other plant food could replace Shiitake.  Besides, Shiitake also has high contents of calcium, sodium, phosphorus, etc. minerals and vitamins B-1, B-2, B-12 and vitamin D precursor.” Shiitake mushrooms and extracts also contains amino acids, including some essential amino acids such as lysine, arginine, threonine, valine, leucine and phenylalanine.

In addition to the research on immune support there has been a considerable amount of research conducted on how Shiitake enzymes affect cholesterol levels.*

TREMELLA

Tremella has long been used in Chinese and Japanese herbalism as a “tonic” herb, as an immuno-modulator.*  Like all medicinal mushrooms Tremella contains beta glucans and other polysaccharides within the indigestable cell walls.  When properly extracted with hot water these polysaccharides are used in supplemental form to maintain, protect or support immune health.* However, just as interesting to many is how Tremella extracts seem to support and improve the health of the skin.  This health benefit is attributed to the fact that some of the polysaccharides in Tremella can help the body maintain the production of hyaluronic acid, the production of which normally declines as the body ages.*

Hyaluronic acid is a carbohydrate, more specifically a mucopolysaccharide occurring naturally throughout the body.  It can be several thousands of sugars (carbohydrates) long.  When not bound to other molecules, it binds to water, giving it a stiff viscous quality similar to “jello”.  This viscous gel is one of the most heavily researched substances in medicine today.

The function of hyaluronic acid in the body is varied, such as binding water and lubricating moveable parts like joints and muscles.  Its consistency and tissue friendliness also allows it to be used in skin care products.  Hyaluronic acid is one of the most hydrophilic (water loving) molecules in nature and can be described as “nature’s moisturizer”.

Through extensive research over the years, hyaluronic acid has yielded amazing results in various applications and locations throughout the body. However, Tremella extracts, by supporting the body’s ability to naturally produce hyaluronic acid from within, may be a better option than trying to add it later through supplementation as the body’s production of hyaluronic declines with age.

I had a chance to buy Shiitake and Tremella at a very reduced rate because the expiration date is 03/18. Expiration dates are not really expiration dates, just something mandated by the government. For more information, read this from Harvard Medical School. This product's efficacy is still excellent, and its immune supporting abilities are out of sight!  As is this deal. You won't get a chance to try this high quality of a product at this price anywhere else. While supplies last.

Dose: I give my dogs 5 - 10 capsules daily. I usually open them and put in food. I do the same in my smoothies.
